It is a fact that sleeping time varies depending on the age or the state of life by which a person is undergoing. Although insomnia may be encountered as early as childhood, more complains on the sleeping disorder are commonly heard from adults. If you want to take note of how the different life stages affect sleep, read along this article.
Life starts from the time you were born and ends when you die. This is a reality we need to accept. During each different life stage, people have varying approaches to get enough sleep. Infants would usually ask milk or listen to light classical music to get a sound sleep while elderly individuals would opt for reading books or watching television. Along these techniques, insomnia may actually take place.
Sleep in the different life stages
In order to appreciate this subject more, we have classified sleep according to the stages in one’s life. Read more and find out where the difference actually lies:
• Infancy. If you would try to observe new born babies in your homes or in your friend’s houses, you will actually find out that they sleep most of the time. Sometimes, you even tend to ask why the baby is sleeping again. This is because during this stage, they are still adjusting to the world. Sleeping is also a key to their development. During the first five to six months, observe that infants divide sleep in multiple times. They may sleep from four to even eight times in a day including their waking up in the wee hours of the morning. As they reach their sixth month onwards, an overnight’s sleep is evident and only a nap during the day is enough.
• Adulthood. Adults are often heard saying “I need to get eight hours of sleep!” This is because these hours is said to be enough to sustain all the activities they experience during the day. In some countries though, they divide their sleeping patterns into two where one to two hours is devoted for a nap and the remaining six to seven hours for overnight sleep. It is during adulthood that the so-called sleep debt concept is experienced. This is a situation where one may not be able to sleep fully during the previous night thus the need to add more sleeping hours for the succeeding day.
• Old age. As one gets older, the sleep becomes shorter as well. This is because despite sleeping lesser than usual, the body feels contented about it. However, it is recommended that the total bed time must be increased in order to combat sleeping disorders such as insomnia. If this will not happen, the situation may become chronic.
Looking at the different life stages, we tend to go back to the importance of sleep. It is therefore important to have a good night’s sleep and follow the number of hours required depending on the life stage you are in. Do not ever deprive yourself of the ample amount of sleep needed for the body’s proper functioning.
