The right amount of sleep cannot really be quantified as to the exact number of hours every person should have it. What may be a satisfying amount of sleep in another person may not work the same way for the rest. This is the reason why even sleep deprivation is also hard to define unless we categorize it.
Some people may claim that they need eight hours of sleep to get them going efficiently for their tasks on the succeeding day. However, some may also say that four or five hours of sleep is sufficient. In this case, sleep deprivation becomes a concept even if the person would not admit it.
What is sleep deprivation?
Sleep deprivation may somehow be easily understood once you get to know why it happens. In the paragraph above, the second sentence comprises of a person who is sleep-deprived. Since he thinks four to five hour is sufficient sleep to get to work the following day, he loses three vital hours which he is not aware about.
The entire system happens this way. Ideally, eight hours is the real gauge of getting the right amount of sleep for the evening. If tonight, you will sleep only seven hours then you have deprived yourself one hour of sleep. If this continues to happen in 24 days, it means that you have already deprived yourself of sleep for one whole day. How much more for people who only get five hours of sleep? In just eight days, they get one whole day of sleep deprivation.
Effects of sleep deprivation
You may not actually admit that you have deprived yourself of sleep especially if you feel satisfied waking the next day. However, what you may not feel may be harmful to your overall health. The most common effects of sleep deprivation include:
• Cognitive impairment. Cognitive has something to do with knowledge or mental abilities. If you deprive yourself of sleep of one hour a day, there is a great chance that you may impair your mind leading to loss of concentration, inability to coordinate and socialize with others and a lesser capacity to screen your thoughts.
• Responsiveness to tasks. Being sleep deprived may become harmful to the job you are in. You may not be able to get your entire system to coordinate with its proper functioning. You may fail to deliver results which other people expect from you.
• Emotional effects. There is a great chance that if you are deprived of sleep, you may feel irritable most of the time. At times you may not notice this unless somebody else tells you that you are already shouting at them. Make this your wake up call to change your sleeping habits.
Sleep deprivation leads to insomnia. Once you accumulate the number of hours you deprived yourself of sleep, you may be shocked that in one whole year, you may have no longer slept well for days. You have to strive hard to be able to change this habit. No one deprives you from sleep except yourself.
