Nightmares are classified as one of the parasomnias. It starts in children as early as the age of 3. Find out how you may prevent your child from this encounter.
Children usually suffer one of the parasomnias like nightmare for some time. This is a normal happening for children aged 3 to 6 years old since this is the time wherein their fears and thoughts are enhanced. Research showed that 50% of these cases disrupt the sleep of their parents as well. Since nightmares involve terrifying dreams, children usually wake up so many times at night thus resulting to anguish in their everyday life situation.
Nightmare is considered a terrible kind of dream that commonly entails some type of made up hazard to the child. The child may have a vision of harmful and fearful conditions. It may include terrifying figures that can disrupt sleep. However, as soon as they wake up, they usually feel relaxed and recall everything that they saw in their dreams.
Nightmares are dissimilar from night terrors since the latter can lead children to encounter incidents of tremendous fear, which results to confusion, crying, and roaming around the room. Throughout night terror, you will find difficulty in waking them up. Usually, the child can no longer remember the dream thus causing panic.
Causes of nightmares
The origin of nightmares is not known, but there are some factors that can be connected to this kind of condition. Over fatigue, lack of sleep, abnormal sleeping pattern, tensions and worry are pointed to as culprits. It can also be associated to a child’s phase of growth.
Majority of nightmares are regular function of dealing with alterations in your everyday existence. However, nightmares in children is usually linked to occurrences in life like going to school, transferring to a new locality, or experiencing traumatic experiences like divorce or re-marrying of both their parents. It can also be associated to heredity and some kinds of mental disorders.
Helping your child cope with their nightmares
The most important thing you can do for your child if they have nightmares is to comfort them. This is the only thing that can help pacify their feeling of fear. You must converse with your child in a calming and soothing manner. Do not switch on the light and tell your child that you are sleeping in a close proximity. Try to console your child by reversing the ending of their frightening dreams so that they will feel secured and in charge of the situation.
How to Prevent Nightmares
Inhibiting nightmares is not possible to do, but there are several measures to help your child feel relax prior to sleeping like:
• Develop a sleeping schedule for your child that will begin almost the same time every night.
• Read comforting bedtime stories and try to converse with them prior to their sleeping time.
• Make an effort to give him a dim light in his room and try to sing him a lullaby or let him listen to a relaxing music before he goes to sleep.
Since children cannot understand yet what is reality and fantasy, try to talk and explain to them that nightmares and monsters are not true. Persuade them to envision encouraging pictures prior sleeping and try to make an optimistic conclusion to their nightmares. Parasomnias like nightmares should be treated at the earlier stage in order not to become another sleeping disorder like insomnia.
