Lorazepam is one benzodiazepine sedative used for treatment of insomnia and anxiety. Learning more about this drug will help you seek more advice from your doctor as to its correct usage
One of the most common reasons why benzodiazepine sedatives for insomnia are recommended by doctors is because of its capabilities to treat some other psychological disorders. Anxiety is known to be one of the most disturbing occurrences in one’s life which leads to the sleeping disorder. This is the reason why lorazepam could be of great help.
Lorazepam’s capabilities of addressing anxiety extend to other facts behind the use of this medication. Needless to say, its sedative effect may cause the body to somehow give-in to the invitation of sleep. There are other things you must pay closer attention to when it comes to the consumption of lorazepam.
Essential things on lorazepam
It has always been stressed that benzodiazepine sedatives work very well with the function of the neurotransmitter known as GABA. They help control the activities in this area in order to eliminate psychological disorders such as anxiety. This is the same mechanism seen in the lorazepam drug.
When compared to other benzodiazepine sedatives though, lorazepam has better effects on a person’s body. It does not cause any toxic results since it is not highly concentrated in the blood stream. It is not also known to counteract with the results of other drugs. The FDA had approved this sedative in 1999. Here are some other essential things on lorazepam:
• Prescription and Dosage. Although it is said to be safer than other benzodiazepines, lorazepam also requires prescription from doctors. It is available in various preparations such as tablets, oral solutions and injections. Tablets range from .5 to 2 mg while the oral solution is on a 2 mg/ml preparation. Injection varies from 2 mg/ml to 4 mg/ml solutions. It is used by individuals faced with anxiety and even depression. It is also known to be effective for people who have panic attacks or manic depression and insomnia. For people with anxiety, 2 to 3 mg are divided to be taken three times daily while for people with insomnia, 2 to 4 mg will be of help when administered before bedtime.
• Contraindications. The counteraction of lorazepam as a benzodiazepine is connected with tranquilizers, narcotics, alcohol and barbiturates. These medications when used together with lorazepam may lead to excessive sleepiness.
• Warnings. Lorazepam should not be taken-in by pregnant women not only during the first trimester of conception but throughout the pregnancy. There have been no reports if it affects the quality of milk produced by breastfeeding mothers.
• Side Effects. The most common adverse reactions associated with the use of the drug include excessive sleepiness, weakness and dizziness. People also complain of headache and other sleep disturbances. In some instances, patients may also feel depressed and have to deal with lack of concentration.
Just like any other benzodiazepine sedatives for insomnia and anxiety, the use of lorazepam may create addiction to some extent. It is for this reason that you are not allowed to suddenly stop taking-in the drug unless with the go signal from your physician. You must always take heed with what your medical expert says if you do not want to be at a greater loss for your condition
